The Homeless tab records basic homeless information as well as district-defined fields. The list of homeless records is sorted by Start Date.

California defines homeless children and youths as individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This definition also includes:

  • Children and youths who are sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason

  • Children and youths who may be living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, shelters

  • Children and youths who have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings

  • Children and youths who are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings, or

  • Migratory children who qualify as homeless because they are children who are living in similar circumstances listed above

California has defined unique Primary Night Time Residence, Unaccompanied Youth, and Runaway Youth statuses. Further information on these fields is described below. For information on all other fields, please see the Homeless article.

Primary Night Time Residence

The Primary Night Time Residence is a coded value representing a Dwelling Type.  Dwelling Type is the type of dwelling or structure in which a homeless individual resides.

Unaccompanied Youth Status Code

An indication of whether or not a student who has been identified as homeless is not in the direct care of their parent or guardian.

Runaway Youth

An indication of whether or not a student, who has been identified as homeless, who is less than 18 years of age, has left home without parental/caregiver permission and stays away for one or more nights.
